"Eagle Wireless" --- issued 3 times per year


The Eagle Wireless newsletter is enjoyed by EHSM members living all over the world, as well as the contiguous US, Hawaii and Alaska. Each issue contains an editorial, historical stories and photographs, articles on museum news and acquisitions, EHSM board and annual meeting reports and community news. Members write many notes of appreciation, but the Wireless has also received Outstanding Awards from both the Alaska Historical Society and Museums Alaska.

Fall 1999
Historical Article: Fred A. Rogers, Spanish-American War veteran. While stationed at Fort Egbert from 1902-04 he worked on the construction of the WAMCAT. As a telegrapher, he sent the first official messages over the line, taking two days with an old army field buzzer on his stock saddle for a table, sitting under a spruce tree beneath heavy canvas in almost steady rain. He sent over 260 telegrams.

Episcopalian Bishop Mark MacDonald presented a quitclaim deed to EHSM for the Episcopal church in Eagle. This includes the church plus two outbuildings.
EHSM received $21,623 two-year grant from the Institute of Museum & Library Services.
Bison bones from riverbank in front of Eagle dated as being 12,270 years old.

Historical Article: General William 'Billy' Mitchell biographical sketch. Tells how his Alaskan experiences affected his military career in developing such an ardent interest in flying plus his prediction of future war in the Pacific.

Historical Article: "Lucile Emily Hanigan" Between 1908-1909, Major Henry Hanigan was the Commanding Officer at Fort Egbert, Eagle, Alaska. Lucile Hanigan and her three children, 5, 4 and 2 1/2 years old, accompanied their husband and father during this assignment. In her daily diary, Mrs. Hanigan provides the readers with an intimate view of family life at this farthest north army post. The Hanigans were a very active family who participated in many of the year round post and city activities.
