EAGLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY & MUSEUMS

COLLECTIONS

When the Eagle Historical Society was organized in 1961, one of the primary purposes was to collect, preserve and exhibit the artifacts from the Eagle area. This function has been extremely successful, thanks to the donations of EHSM members and friends. Continuous arrival of new information and material makes this area of the EHSM work both exciting and challenging. The collections have not only been used to develop educational and fine exhibits in all six museum buildings but have been used for the basis of materials published about the Eagle area and its people. One of the most satisfying uses of the collections is helping researchers and families discover long-sought and new information.

Additional gifts are always welcome

New materials will be accepted if they relate to the mission of EHSM. If you have any questions, please contact the Eagle Historical Society & Museums.

ARCHIVES -

Eagle was organized in 1897 long before there was any formal legal system in the Upper Yukon area. The only evidence of some of the earliest activities is contained in the carefully preserved archival papers and ledgers. These rare finds are open for public use. Catalog cards for each item may be seen in both the EHSM office and public library. Research can be done for you locally, at an hourly charge as staff time permits.  A few of the subjects covered are:
MINING - Notebooks of mining claims recorded by an elected recorder as early as 1897.
LOCAL GOVERNMENT - Minutes of miners’ meetings, organization by elected Chamber of Commerce members, property ownership, petition for incorporation in 1900 and city minutes and records.
ROSTER OF RESIDENTS -
1895 to present.
COMMERCIAL COMPANIES - Ledgers, correspondence.
DIARIES & CORRESPONDENCE - Individual prospectors

and residents.
MAPS - Includes early military exploration of the area.
FEDERAL COURT RECORDS -
Original court cases of trials held by Judge James Wickersham in Eagle 1900-1903. U.S. Marshal & Commissioner's records.

Renovated 100+-year-old cabin is now home to EHSM's extensive archives. Education Curator Theresa Dean assists researchers and visitors in finding that elusive document or photo.

PHOTOGRAPHS -

Thousands of donated historic photographs have been copied and catalogued, providing an outstanding visual history. The card index and digitized photos are available for public perusal at the EHSM office.  Copies of the photographs may be purchased -- if you know the photo you want, click HERE for our downloadable Photo Permission Form (MS Word .doc).

MUSEUM COLLECTIONS -

Thanks to the generosity of Eagle Historical Society members and friends, the museum collections from Eagle's early days fill six large historic buildings. Over 95% of the collections have been interpreted and are included in the museum exhibits.
